Dog Proestrus Cycle

Prior to Proestrus

For 2-3 weeks prior to the onset of proestrus, serum levels of Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) rise. This hormone stimulates production of folicles within the ovaries which contain the microscopic eggs called ova.

Active Period

• Physical Signs: The female reproductive tissues swell, the vulva swells and the visible genitalia becomes reddened. Bloody discharge will become visible
• Actions in beginning: She will constantly lick her genitalia, she may act nervous and be snappy towards other animals
• Actions near end: She may try to escape to find a mate.
• Duration: Average is 9 days (7-10). Can be between 2 and 27 days
